Hatha Yoga with Sharon Bullock \
20 years summed up in one paragragh.
For many years my life could best be described as an
extremely long black tunnel filled with major health
problems causing unrelenting daily physical pain.
I also experienced demanding yet unrewarding career
challenges and difficult personal relationships.
Together, these things left me financially crippled, angry and lacking motivation. I saw no way out of my situation and spiralled down into a deep depression.
I believed if I could improve my ill health from the result of Blood Clots to the heart and lungs and eliminate or at least reduce also the physical pain I was also experiencing 24 hours a day from past skydiving injuries that I would find the strength to address the other problems in my life and slowly dig myself out of the dark hole in which I found myself living. I therefore tried many treatments over many years ranging from traditional doctors and physiotherapy and Chinese medicine. I am thrilled to say that ‘fortunately’ these treatments brought me little or no relief - Had these remedies worked I would have stopped searching and may never have discovered Yoga.
My first introduction to Yoga
I will forever be thankful to an unexpected chain of events and a close friend of mine, who knowing my desperate situation, suggested I try Yoga. I consulted my various doctors, including my physiotherapist and Chinese herbalist, all of whom advised me not to attempt Hot Hatha yoga. However, after witnessing the beautiful outer-glow and inner-confidence of my friend I believed it was time to go with my gut feeling. I thought “how can something be bad if it makes people look and feel so good?” I investigated further about all the benefits of Hot Yoga and made the decision to fully commit to this practice for at least 6 months if I was to give it a real go and see if there were any changes to my conditions.
New Location and a New Life
I also discovered the picturesque seaside town of Byron Bay in the northern region of the state of New South Wales on the east coast of Australia. It’s a place with a reputation for where people go to ‘heal’ and rediscover themselves or escape the big city lifestyle. I decided to relocate to Byron Bay to start practicing the certain Yoga sequence under Norma Strangs School. The first 6-months was extremely challenging as I found it very painful, difficult and exhausting given my medical ailments combined with the self-doubt in my ability to achieve my goals after having experienced so many defeats. However, I was patient and persisted with my daily routine. Fast forward several more months and to say my life has been transformed through this specific set of Yoga sequence of postures is an understatement. I feel so alive, so self-aware, so positive and so, so grateful that I discovered Yoga. I am now able to perform the postures and my mind is much more balanced and focused. I know that Yoga will remain a major focus in my life...for the rest of my life.
Yoga has literally transformed me physically and mentally so I now embrace every new day and the people I meet with open arms, open eyes and an open heart. I feel compelled to teach others the benefits of Yoga so they too can enrich their lives and improve their physical and mental well-being.
